Whole House Water Filter Installation Cost

HomeGuide puts the labor to install a whole-house water filter at $200 to $600 (its text gives $120 to $600 for water filter systems in general), and its well water guide gives $150 to $300 for a simple filter installation of 1 to 2 hours and $500 to $2,000 for a multi-stage system. The job grows when the plumber has to add a bypass, a drain, an outlet or a long pipe run, and a permit can add $30 to $500.

Typical installation cost

HomeGuide publishes two sets of numbers, one in its water filtration guide (Sept 2025) and one in its well water guide (April 2026). They are shown side by side, not averaged:

Line itemWater filtration guideWell water guide
Labor, whole-house system$200 – $600—
Professional installation, overall—$200 – $2,000
Simple filter installation (1 to 2 hours)—$150 – $300
Multi-stage system installation—$500 – $2,000
Plumber’s hourly rate$45 – $150$75 – $150
New plumbing loop or bypass—$200 – $500
New drain$300 – $800 (to the sewer line)$100 – $300 (drain line)
Electrical work / new outlet$150 – $350 (outlet)$100 – $400 (for UV, pumps)
Plumbing permit$30 – $500—

These are labor and parts for the hookup. The filter itself is separate; see whole house water filter cost for system prices. HomeGuide’s well guide also notes that “Some water treatment companies bundle installation into the equipment price.”

What the plumber does

Schematic of a filter on a loop off the main pipe with shutoff valves on each side and a bypass valve on the main line
Valves on each side and a bypass let the filter be serviced without shutting off water to the house.

A whole-house filter goes on the main water line, so the work is a plumbing job, not a plug-in. One maker’s manual shows what a typical job has to cover. Applied Membranes, which makes the cartridge systems Water Anywhere sells, says in its installation manual:

  • Where it goes: “at any point after the main water supply enters the home and before the water line splits or meets the water heater.”
  • Who installs it: “It is recommended to use a professional licensed plumber for the whole house water filter installation. The installation must comply with all state and local codes.”
  • A bypass: “We recommend planning a bypass loop around the system to allow maintenance without disrupting the water to the home.”
  • Pressure: its maximum incoming pressure is 90 psi; “If your feed water supply is over 90 PSI or prone to spikes, a pressure regulator is required.”
  • Space: at least 5 inches of clearance under the housings for filter changes, on a wall that can hold the system’s weight when full.

Note the gap between the store page and the manual: Water Anywhere’s listing for the same system advertises “Fast and Simple DIY Installation,” while the manual recommends a licensed plumber. Go by the manual. This site doesn’t give installation steps: work on the main water line belongs to a licensed plumber.

Tank systems add their own needs. HomeGuide’s well guide says systems that backwash, such as “iron filters, softeners, some carbon filters,” need a drain connection, and that “UV systems and chemical feed pumps require a dedicated electrical outlet.” If a new outlet or circuit is needed, that part is for a licensed electrician.

What raises the price

From HomeGuide’s water filtration guide, items that add to the bill:

  • Distance: pipe extensions cost $150 to $850 for runs of 25 feet or more.
  • Location: attics and tight storage areas mean higher labor.
  • Old plumbing: “Homes with old plumbing often need multiple pipe modifications.”
  • More stages: “Each filter increases system costs,” and complex systems take longer.
  • Removing an old unit: $40 to $300 for removal and disposal.
  • Wall repair: $300 to $1,500+ to patch drywall opened for new lines.

The Minnesota Department of Health’s cost ranges (based on 2017 quotes) are built the same way: “the low-end cost is for a treatment unit the homeowner installs; the high-end cost is for a treatment unit installed by a water treatment professional.”

If your water also needs softening, the softener adds its own loop, drain and outlet; see water softener cost.

Permits and code

HomeGuide says plumbing permits cost “$30 to $500 for altering water connections when installing a large water filtration system.” Whether you need one depends on your town. The Applied Membranes warranty terms put that on the buyer: “CUSTOMER has full responsibility for obtaining any licenses, permits and inspections required.” Ask the plumber whether your town requires a permit and who pulls it.

In Minnesota, the Department of Health says that if you work with a treatment professional, “make sure they are a licensed plumber or licensed water conditioning contractor.” That rule is Minnesota’s; ask your state or local building department what applies where you live.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Is the quote itemized: system, valves, bypass loop, drain, outlet, permit and haul-away?
  • Where will the filter go, and will outdoor faucets be filtered or not?
  • Will you install shut-off valves and a bypass so filters can be changed without cutting water to the house?
  • Is my water pressure under the system’s rating, or do I need a pressure regulator?
  • Does this system need a drain or an outlet?
  • Will you pull the permit, and is the inspection included?
  • What labor warranty do you give, and does installing a system I bought myself change it?
  • What will the filters cost each year, and how often do they need changing? (See whole house water filter maintenance.)

If you haven’t tested your water yet, do that before booking a plumber; the Water Check tool shows what to look for in your report.
